Understanding the Value of Prenatal Classes
As labour and delivery nurses, we hear this question all the time. Here's our honest answer, based on years inside Calgary delivery rooms.
If you’re pregnant and planning a hospital birth in Calgary or the surrounding area, you may be wondering whether prenatal classes are actually worth it, especially when you’ll already be delivering in a medical setting.
As labour and delivery nurses, we hear this question all the time.
“Do I really need prenatal classes if I’m giving birth in a hospital?”
It’s usually asked quietly. Sometimes with a bit of guilt attached. Almost always with the unspoken follow-up: “They’re expensive… are they actually worth it?”
So here’s the honest answer from real nurses who actually work in labour and delivery.
Short Answer? Yes!
Yes. We genuinely believe prenatal classes are worth it for all births, including hospital births.
And not because we teach them. Because we see what happens when people don’t take them.
Why This Question Comes Up So Often
We get it. There’s a cost attached to prenatal classes. And when you’re already staring down baby gear, childcare, and everything else that comes with growing a family, it’s fair to ask where your money is best spent.
Many people also assume that because they’re giving birth in a hospital, with doctors, nurses, monitors, and medical expertise, everything will just be handled.
But here’s the thing we see every single day.
You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know
When labour starts doing what labour does (which is almost never exactly what you planned), not knowing what’s happening, or understanding why, can feel overwhelming, scary, and disempowering.
What Prenatal Classes Actually Give You
Very rarely does anyone walk away from birth saying, “That went exactly as I planned.”
There are twists. Turns. Decisions. Unexpected moments.
Prenatal education doesn’t give you control over birth, but it gives you context.
It helps you:
Understand what’s happening in your body.
Recognize normal versus concerning changes.
Learn the language being used around you.
Have conversations before labour about your bottom line with your partner.
Feel confident asking questions, even in high-stress moments.
These things matter more than most people realize.
A Quick Note About Hospital Births
There’s a narrative out there that hospitals just want to speed things up, intervene quickly, and treat birth like a factory line. That hasn’t been our experience.
What we want genuinely is:
A healthy baby
A healthy parent
The least trauma possible
A birth experience that honours your wishes as much as safely possible
Yes, there are times when plans need to change. Sometimes they need to change quickly. And those moments are exactly where preparation makes the biggest difference.
One of the Most Important Things We Teach: You Have a Choice
A huge part of what we cover in Hello Baby classes is informed decision-making.
Many people don’t realize they’re allowed to ask questions, or that asking questions isn’t being “difficult.”
We teach the BRAIN acronym:
Benefits - What are the benefits of this intervention?
Risks - What are the risks?
Alternatives - Are there other options?
Intuition - What does my gut say?
Not now / No - What happens if I say no, or ask to wait?
Simply knowing you can ask these questions can completely change how birth feels.
“But What If Things Don’t Go the Way I Want?”
This is important to say clearly: Prenatal classes cannot control your birth.
We can’t promise:
A vaginal birth
An unmedicated birth
A fast birth
A complication-free birth
What we can do is give you:
Tools to support labour
Strategies to cope with pain
Education around inductions, epidurals, and interventions
Confidence to advocate for yourself or your partner
So that no matter what happens, you can walk away thinking, “That wasn’t what I planned, but I understood it, and I felt supported.”
Moments We See All the Time
Honestly? We could write an entire blog series on this alone.
A few common ones:
People hoping for an unmedicated birth without understanding how labour pain can feel or how long labour can last.
Inductions being expected to take less than 24 hours, especially with first babies.
Not realizing movement and position changes matter even with an epidural.
Not knowing they can ask for tools like birthing balls, stools, or bed adjustments.
Huge gaps in postpartum preparation, feeding, recovery, expectations, and support.
Birth is relatively short. Postpartum is a marathon. And preparation for both matters.
Why Our Classes Are a Little Different
Hello Baby is taught by registered nurses who actively work in obstetrics, with oodles of real-world experience. Between our four instructors, that adds up to over 90 years at the bedside, which feels a little wild to say out loud, but also speaks to the depth of knowledge we bring into every class.
We’ve supported families delivering at hospitals across Calgary, including Rockyview General Hospital, Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, and South Health Campus, as well as families delivering in High River Hospital and Canmore Hospital.
We also support families under midwifery care, including those planning hospital births and home births, as well as those planning scheduled cesareans.
We don’t have an agenda.
We’re evidence-based, inclusive, and deeply aware that birth looks different for everyone.
Our goal is simple: To help you feel calm, capable, informed, and supported, before, during, and after birth.
Many families have shared their experiences in our Google Reviews, which speak to how prepared and supported they felt going into birth after taking our classes.
So… Do You Need Prenatal Classes?
Need? No.
But are they one of the most impactful ways to prepare for birth and postpartum, whether you’re planning a home birth, a hospital birth, or something in between? We’ve seen the difference, over and over again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Hello Baby Classes Support Medicated and Unmedicated Births?
Yes. Absolutely.
Our classes are non-agended. Whether you choose an epidural or not, plan to breastfeed or bottle-feed, hope for a vaginal birth or are planning a cesarean, our goal is the same: to give you clear, evidence-based information so you can make informed choices that feel right for you.
We don’t believe there’s one “right” way to give birth, just the way that’s safest and most supportive for you and your family.
Are Prenatal Classes Worth It for Second-Time Parents?
Often, yes. Many second-time parents tell us they actually got more out of prenatal classes the second time around, once they knew what questions to ask.
We’ve had many second-time parents who experienced a very traumatic first birth and didn’t take prenatal classes the first time. They often come to us wanting to do things differently, and the feedback we hear after their subsequent birth is overwhelmingly positive. Feeling informed and prepared can make a significant difference, even when outcomes don’t look exactly the same.
Do Prenatal Classes Replace My Doctor or Midwife?
No. Prenatal classes complement your medical care; they don’t replace your provider. Your doctor or midwife manages your medical care. Prenatal education helps you understand what’s happening and how to participate in decisions.
